Film Set Catering Case Study: 4-Month Hot Buffet Contract at Martini Film Studios
The Brief
When Martini Film Studios in Langley reached out to The Gourmet Lunch Ladies, they needed a catering partner who could do more than just show up with food. They needed reliability, variety, and the ability to feed a diverse crew — every single weekday for four months — without busting their production budget.
For a working film set, lunch isn't just a meal. It's a scheduled break in a tightly run day. The crew needed to eat well, eat quickly, and get back to work. There was no room for cold food, late deliveries, or a rotating menu that felt like the same thing on repeat.
The Challenge
Feeding 60 people daily on a production budget meant we had to be creative without cutting corners. The goals were clear:
Keep costs within the client's budget without sacrificing quality
Provide genuine variety so crew members weren't eating the same meal twice in the same week
Accommodate a range of dietary needs across a large, diverse crew
Deliver on a precise schedule to fit the production's lunch break
On top of standard gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian requirements, several crew members had specific eating protocols — one crew member, for example, required plain chicken and steamed vegetables with no oil, no butter, and no sauces. These weren't requests we could accommodate once and forget — they needed to be right, every day, for four months.
Our Approach
Weekly Customized Menu Planning
Each week, we sent Martini Film Studios a customized menu plan for the week ahead. Rather than rotating through a fixed set of options, we built menus with genuine variety — different proteins, different cuisines, different sides — so that crew members had something to look forward to each day.
Over the course of the contract, the buffet rotated through dishes including:
Cajun Chicken with creamy mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables
Chicken Shawarma with accompaniments and fresh sides
Pasta Buffet with multiple sauce options
Soups, salads, and rotating side dishes to round out each meal
Gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options were included in every single service. Specialty meals for crew members with strict dietary protocols were prepared separately and labelled clearly.
On-Schedule, Every Day
Delivery was scheduled for 11:30am sharp each day, giving our team 30 minutes to set up, organize the buffet, and have everything hot and ready for the 12:00pm lunch break.
To make daily setup seamless, we kept our chafing dishes on site throughout the week — meaning each morning's delivery was efficient, consistent, and never held up the crew's schedule.
Working Within the Budget
We worked closely with the production team to develop a catering plan that delivered real value within their budget. That meant smart menu planning — choosing dishes that could be prepared at scale without compromising on quality — and building a rhythm with the client so there were no surprises on either side.
The Result
Over four months, we delivered more than 80 hot buffet lunches to a crew of 60 — never missing a delivery window, never repeating a weekly menu, and never failing to accommodate a dietary need.
The contract ran from February through to June 2026, wrapping up as production concluded. We're proud to have been a reliable part of the Martini Films team for the duration of the project.
What This Contract Taught Us
Long-term catering contracts on film and TV sets require a different kind of discipline than one-off events. Variety, punctuality, and dietary flexibility aren't nice-to-haves — they're non-negotiable when you're feeding the same 60 people every day for months.
It's exactly the kind of catering challenge we're built for.
